Examples of Diversity in My Work

Little Tokyo's Fashion Scene

With the emphasis on streetwear becoming a bigger trend in American culture, the appeal to many customers has arisen. One shop captures this trend with inspiration from Japan and Southern California. Japangeles in the heart of Little Tokyo is an L.A.-based streetwear store that opened in 2010 as a small stand but was able to expand to a storefront in 2017.

Yuen, an associate of the store admired its uniqueness and emphasis on the importance of the in-person experience of not only Japangeles but

100 Years of Cinco de Mayo

The South Omaha community will celebrate a century of history this weekend marking the 100th anniversary of the Cinco de Mayo festival.

The official 100th anniversary of the festival was in 2020, but was cancelled due to the pandemic. Last year’s festival was pushed later into the summer for the same reason, so the celebration is being held this year.

“This year everything is back to a normal cycle,” executive director of the Cinco de Mayo Omaha Organization, Marco Mora said.

New Boba Shop Makes its Way to Papillion

The popular Asian drink bubble tea, also known as boba, has made its way into the Papillion community. Co-owners Eric Ho, Sandy Nguyen and Harry Ngo opened Sip Cha Papillion after noticing a lack of boba offerings in the area.

“We are traveling all around the world and the United States, we as young people really like bubble teas in general and in our community in Papillion, we don’t have any good boba teas here that’s why I try to open one to introduce all the good flavors to all my American f

What the Surge in Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Means to Asian Americans in Omaha —

However, the attacks raised concerns for Asian business owners including Duc Ong, owner of Omaha Nails & Spa. “I feel so scared because what I saw in Atlanta, but hopefully everything will be good,” Ong said.

Ong believes an attack similar to what happened in Atlanta is unlikely to happen here as he believes in the goodwill of Nebraskans and Omahans. He’s seen it through his diverse customers in how kind and friendly each one is, he says. Ong shares this sentiment with many others in the commun

Commitment to Diversity

Diversity is very important to our coverage in The Orator especially since our student body is diverse. The racial demographics of Bryan High break down to:

  • Hispanic/Latino 68.10%
  • White 13.50%
  • Black or African American 12.6%
  • Two or More Races 3.30%
  • Asian or Pacific Islander 1.70%
  • American Indian or Alaska Native 0.90%

All three years I've been on staff with The Orator our staff makeup has been very diverse in nearly all aspects. I've continued to ensure that the newsroom was a safe place for our staff members to share anything they feel.

I was shown the importance of diversity when I attended the AAJA JCamp in the summer of 2022. Here I heard from many industry leaders about the lack of diversity in the industry. Often they were the only person of color in the newsroom and they couldn't fully express themselves because of it.

Localizing national issues can be difficult sometimes but I was able to do it with this topic. Gender identity within schools is a controversial topic in itself. At the time Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson joined a lawsuit with 19 other states suing the Biden Administration over anti-discrimination laws specifically about gender identity.

Instead of just writing a straight news story about the lawsuit which would frankly bore some readers I decided to do a more analytical approach and see how schools around my community handled this issue. I found that these public school districts in Omaha were on a wide spectrum on how they handled gender identity. Most didn't have any formal policy but they've said they would work with the students. I found three school districts had policies on the books about gender identity. Gretna had a policy that was the opposite of Bellevue and Omaha Public Schools. BPS and OPS staff would refer to students by their preferred names and pronouns while Grenta required parental consent.
