ADPR 221: Strategic Writing for Advertising and Public Relations
This class presented a unique learning opportunity. I have a heavy journalism background with my involvement in The Daily Nebraskan. I am a triple major studying journalism, advertising and public relations and broadcasting. I went to this path because I wanted to see all sides of the industry to find out which areas I liked best and potentially pursue a career in. I also believe that exposure in every aspect would make me a well-rounded employee no matter where I ended up. This class was very different from my journalism roots but I was able to see how my skills especially my writing skills could adapt to the ADPR world. I did a lot of new things in this class. Among them was heavy on time management. I took this accelerated course with another writing class while taking on a full-time internship at a newspaper. Balancing two classes, a job, and my personal life was not easy this summer but I got through it.
Coursework wise I got to create a variety of pieces from creative briefs to scripts for a TV commercial. The biggest takeaway from this class to me was that you must keep your audience in mind when writing. Writing creative briefs for a client is going to take a different form of writing than creating copy for a magazine ad. While I was writing I was thinking of who was going to read this and tailored it to that reader. It’s very similar in journalism when we often have to make sense of jargon so our readers understand.
